Yasuhiro Yamashita had his ankle broken by the throw prior to his gold medal performance at the Los Angeles Olympics. After that, Kani Basami was banned in competition by the IJF.  The danger to the legs in that if they are not attacked directly backwards at the knee in the direction they normally bend then uke can injure the knees. Since a person defending the throw will try to move, turn, or spread the legs (one forward and one backward

xxxi) To intentionally fall backwards when the other contestant is clinging to his back and when either contestant has control of the other's movement.
