International Judo Federation is the world's governing body of Judo recognized by the International Olympic Committee and consisting of 5 Continental Unions and 182 member National Federations. The I.J.F. was proposed by Jigoro Kano in the thirties. It came into being in July, 1951. In 1948 The British Judo Association was formed, which is the governing body for Judo in the UK and is a member of the IJF.
