Boys Cadet Squad 2003.
26th January 2003.
This was our first International Competition of the year – Groesbeek is always a well attended hard fought match and this year was exactly the same, with 850 competitors from Czech Republic; Israel; Germany; France; Belgium; Romania; Cyprus; Great Britain and obviously the Dutch.
Our team consisted of initially 83 players, in three age categories, 1989/89 – 1987/88 & 1984/85/86. Due to injury several players withdrew prior to our departure – but we still had enough players to fill two Coach’s and set off to Holland to give of our best.
Ramsay Thomson – was the Head of our Delegation, with Support Coach’s; Tony Macconnell; Trevor Sitlinton; Michael Liptrot; Dave Clark; John Blakely; Lou Kerr; Clark Nutter. Medical Support – Innes Morton.

1989/90.
Our first success in this age group came with excellent performances in the U34kgs category – with Ashley Mckensie defeating Phillip Wassell in the final, both of them fought well to get to there, with the Gold medal going to Ashley and the Silver to Phillip.
Gary Hall at U41kgs and Russell Parker U50kgs both gained well earned Silver medals in their respective weights with some hard work and some good techniques.
Nathan Burns & Anthony Jessop in U50kgs & U45kgs respectively took
Bronze medals in their first Cadet International. This was a good start for this group of young players many of them new to the Cadet Squad and Judo at this level and an early introduction to armlocks and strangles in competition, which they all coped with very well. Jean-Rene Badrick U55kgs won our final medal of the group, taking the Gold with a series of good wins demonstrating some terrific Judo. Medals didn’t go to all our players, in this category but they showed that they had the will and determination to succeed.
1987/88.
This is perhaps the most important year group, for many years, with both the European Youth Olympic Festival and the European Cadet Championships being held within a month in July and August 2003. The majority of our Squad within this age group were there, Groesbeek is the first of our selection events for the above Championships, the majority of the weight categories were well supported, with plenty of good opposition.
We took medals in all the weight categories within this group with Marcus Bascombe and Adam Green, perhaps showing the best Judo in the group, with some tremendous competitive Judo, fighting through their quarters – both having good victories in the semi-finals to meet in the final of the U60kgs – with Marcus coming out on top, taking the Gold and the Silver for Adam (36 players).
Scott Malone U46kgs took a Silver in this group winning his KO sheet, only to lose in the final to Rolf van Baarsen (26 players). Scott has moved up from U42kgs at which he won the Nationals in November. At U90kgs our final Silver medal went to Jayson Fairbairn, in a small group of 7 players, Jayson lost in the final to Michel Velthoen.
We took four bronze medals with Chris Turnbull U50kgs, losing his first KO match to Jamy Kromosemito (eventual winner), into the Repechage, winning four further match’s before defeating Albert Westerhof for the Bronze. (25 players).
Tom Holton new to the Cadet Squad took a well earned Bronze in a hard
fought 66kg group - he won his quarter with three wins – losing to Yair
Benshbath – Israel, for a place in the final – he had a good victory Nick
Zwartjens to gain his first Cadet medal (30 players) Jesse Belardo U73kgs
Fought well after losing his initial match – coming in through the Repechage with four wins to take just reward. Our final medal went to Luke Hughes 081kgs, he had three wins in the contest – losing to Jayson Fairbairn.
We also had some good performance’s with many boys taking 5th places.

Your Coach, Elivis is alive and well Ramsey & Helen can prove it. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary may you have many more, form ever one on the Cadet Squad.
1984/85/86.
This age group at Groesbeek is always a difficult one in which we struggle to get results, our players in this group are normally our most experienced Squad Members, again the weights were well supported – the U55kgs category, final, was well contested, with Ashley Hutchinson Gold defeating Jonathan Spencer Silver, in a hard fought match. Tom Reed U66kgs continued his progress taking a Gold medal in a very competitive weight – this after qualifying for the Junior Men’s Squad in December. .
Our final medal went to Julian Kerr U73kgs, he too fought hard to gain a well earned Silver medal
It was an excellent event for our boys - in all ages and categories, an ideal tournament at which our players are tested and introduced to International Competition. Thanks must go to all the Cadet Squad Coach’s for their hard work and effort over the weekend – the players who competed, their Coach’s and parents who supported the Squad in Holland.
Groesbeek is located 10 km south

east of the town of Nijmegen and close to the German frontier
